    Eyewash & Safety Station FAQ

What is ANSI Z358.1 compliance and why does it matter?

ANSI Z358.1 is the national standard for emergency eyewash and shower equipment. It outlines key performance requirements, including:

    • Water flow rate (at least 0.4 GPM for eyewashes)

    • Hands-free activation in 1 second or less

    • 15-minute minimum flow duration

    • Proper positioning (e.g. within 10 seconds’ reach of a hazard)

Why it matters: ANSI compliance ensures your lab or facility meets OSHA expectations and provides effective emergency protection for eyes, face, and body.

Deck-mounted eyewashes (like the EW805) are designed to install next to a sink. Key steps:

    1. Mount the base securely to the lab counter using provided fittings.

    2. Connect to your water supply (typically ½” IPS).

    3. Ensure horizontal swing clears the sink basin fully.

    4. Test flow to verify ANSI-compliant pressure and duration.
💡 Always follow the manufacturer’s install guide and check for local plumbing code compliance.

    • Eyewash: Targets the eyes only (smaller spray heads, lower flow).

    • Eye/face wash: Larger coverage to decontaminate both eyes and surrounding facial area.

    • Safety stations: Combine eyewash + drench shower in a single unit for full-body emergency use.

Weekly: Quick function check to flush sediment and verify flow.

Annually: Full inspection for compliance with ANSI Z358.1 standards (timed flow, temperature, activation).
